The Cutaway is a striking new cultural venue nestled beneath the eastern end of the iconic Barangaroo Reserve on Sydney’s harbourfront. This unique, multilevel space is being meticulously constructed into the expansive sandstone surface that existed here, with an enormous rock face opening dramatically to the sky above.
Originally an open-air concrete shell, the Cutaway is undergoing a comprehensive fit-out program to transform it into one of Sydney’s premier cultural facilities. The bespoke design by FJC Studio resolves previous functional limitations with new enclosures, amenities and adaptable event spaces capable of hosting exhibitions, festivals, installations and more.
Key elements of the 3-level design include dedicated event and gallery spaces, a First Nations education center, improved acoustics, soundproof glass skylights, a new entry forecourt, on-site amenities, commercial kitchen, offices and back-of-house facilities. The design continues the Barangaroo precinct’s commitment to sustainable climate-positive principles and celebrating the Indigenous culture and heritage of the area.
When completed in 2025, the Cutaway will provide an outstanding multi-purpose venue for a diverse range of cultural and artistic programming. Its iconic design respectfully integrates with the natural sandstone environment while establishing a new world-class events destination immersed in Sydney’s urban landscape. The flexible, highly-adaptable spaces enable the Cutaway to host large-scale fairs and concerts to more intimate galleries and installations.
