Sunshine Emergency Department

Government, Health, Refurbishment

This $34.9 million project funded by the Victorian Government dramatically expanded and enhanced the emergency facilities at Sunshine Hospital to better serve the growing western suburbs of Melbourne.

The comprehensive redevelopment more than doubled the treatment capacity of the emergency department by adding 65 new state-of-the-art treatment spaces. This included a new dedicated pediatric unit tailored specifically for younger patients requiring emergency care. The kid-friendly pediatric area features its own triage and reception, fast-track treatment spaces, x-ray facilities, and nine additional treatment rooms in a calming environment.

A key aspect was the new $5.3 million mental health, alcohol and other drugs hub. One of six being built across Victoria, this hub allows patients presenting with related issues to receive direct, specialized care sooner. The expanded emergency department also gained a new resuscitation area, behavioral assessment unit, imaging suite, and expanded admin areas.

With these upgrades, Sunshine Hospital’s emergency department – one of the busiest in the state seeing around 65,000 patients annually – can now treat an additional 59,000 cases per year. The enhancements enable the hospital to provide more timely, higher-capacity and higher-quality emergency medical care to families in this rapidly growing region.
